About Magnolia Bar

Affiliation

Associate Member - National Bar Association. The National Bar Association is a National Association composed primarily of African-American Lawyers.

Founding Member - Mississippi Black Professionals’ Association. The Mississippi Black Professionals’ Association consists of: Magnolia Bar Association; Mississippi Medical and Surgical Association; Mississippi Dental Society; Magnolia State Pharmaceutical Auxiliary.

 

Standing Committees

CONTINUING LEGAL EDUCATION: The Magnolia Bar Association Is approved by the State of Mississippi as a sponsoring agency for continuing legal education programs. All attorneys in the general practice of law must have 1 2 hours each year of continuing legal education.

PUBLICATION AND NEWSLETTER: The Association has authorized the committee to publish a newsletter four times per year.

COURTESY. The Courtesy Committee is responsible for providing a Memorial Service at each Annual Meeting to memorialize those members of the Association who have died in the past year. Courtesies are extended to each member of the Association or his immediate family In the form of a card and/or flowers.

 

Board Representation

Two lawyers serve as representatives of the Magnolia Bar Association on the Board of Directors of North
Mississippi Rural Legal Services and two lawyers on the Board of Directors of Central Mississippi Legal Services
and one lawyer on the Board of Directors of Southwest Mississippi Legal Services. Other lawyers serve on State
Boards as set by the Mississippi Legislature.

 

Major Projects

Some of the major projects of the associat6ion are:

1. Mid-Winter Banquet and other activities - January
2. High School Mock Trial Competition - March;
3. Annual Convention - May;
4.  Boys and Girls Law Camp - June
5. Tougaloo Summit - August;
6. Fall CLE - November;
7. Legislative Breakfast - November
8. Thanksgiving Dinner - November;
9. Toys for Children - December;

In addition to the above, the association Is actively involved in mentoring students, pro bono cases, and a number of other community projects. The Young Lawyers’ Committee provides an avenue for new lawyers to become involved in the Magnolia Bar. Finally, the Judicial Council sponsors a symposium for law students in January of each year.
