| I am honored and privileged to serve as your president for 2009. Our association has a rich history and a legacy which requires action from all of us. We must all be active in achieving and/or maintaining the goals of our founding attorneys: James A. Burnes, Benjamine Green, Emette Perkins, Onette Johnson, Jack Young, Sr., Sidney Tharp, Carsie A. Hall, and R. Jess Brown. The Magnolia Bar Association was organized in 1955 in response to the conditions and hardships which African American citizens faced in Mississippi. Today, the Magnolia Bar Association remains a vibrant organization with a mission to ensure that all citizens of our state have reasonable and responsible access to the justice system. We want to pursue liberty and justice for all. During my presidency, I pledge to represent the Magnolia Bar Association zealously regarding issues of interest to the entire organization. I pledge to include our members from the entire state in our CLE seminars, the Tougaloo Summit, and other meetings and gatherings that we may schedule. I plan to travel to areas of the state to meet with members in the North, South, East and West. I plan to be accessible and I invite you all to let me know about the issues that concern you and the practice of law where you live and work. The practice of law in Mississippi has undergone many changes. Over the years, we have witnessed legislative and political changes that have drastically affected the practice of law. It is a fact that the attorneys who continue to practice law are genuinely interested in the pursuit of liberty and justice for all, regardless of the climate. We must continue to fight for the rights of the citizens of Mississippi. During my presidency, I will use my best efforts to promote positive change for all members of this organization. In turn, I ask you to continue to be educated and engaged members who work hard and strive to help me bring about positive change. You, the members of the Magnolia Bar Association, are the people who matter. You are the warriors for justice. Thank you for being active members. I can not accomplish one single thing without you. I ask for your prayers and also for your help in meeting the challenges that we will face together. Sincerely, Gale N. Walker Gale N. Walker |
